St. Edward's Band

The band program is open to all grade five and six students. The following instruments are taught: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion. Band is a “pull out” program. Therefore, students leave the regular classroom to get instrumental instruction. In addition, music is a discipline and therefore regular home practice is needed. Many consider the band program to be a music program only. It is much more than that. Many studies have concluded that instrumental music helps the maturation process, builds self esteem and confidence and provides young children with the tools and appreciation for group work and success.

Self discipline is that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another.” – Joseph Addison

St. Edward's Music

All students from Kindergarten through Grade Six participate in our classroom music program. The program is mainly based on the Kodaly and Orff-Schulwerk methodologies. Students learn through songs, poetry, rhymes and children’s literature. Students sing, chant rhymes, dance, perform body percussion, play singing games and play classroom instruments. Recorder is also introduced in grades four through six. Students learn repetoire that reflects their own culture as well as other cultures around the world. Each month, we feature a composer of the month both in class and through a PA announcement on the composer’s birthday.

Stuednts are given opportunities to perform at school concerts or assemblies as well as outside events such as Christmas Carolling at Admiral’s Coast Retirement Center and the Sheraton Hotel and at Rotary Music Festival at the MUN School of Music.
